Nov. is all about tours, 11/1/14

All dates, deadlines, times and places need to be confirmed with the sponsoring organization or school. This newsletter is a listing of interesting sounding programs that come across my desk. It is not necessarily an endorsement of the programs. All listings are unpaid.

What is up with me?

2014-2015 Public School Calendar

PS 8 in Brooklyn Heights is warning parents that the kindergarten class may be capped this year. No need to panic yet, but wise to check out other options as a backup.

If you want email updates from the DoE about Kindergarten admissions, PreK admissions, G&T, Charter Schools, late breaking news, subscribe to the DoE's email alerts here.
Application process (Kindergarten Connect) won't be out until January.
Prek is even LATER. None of the dates are posted and they won't be for months, so keep your pants on. You can tour schools now so you know how to rank them later.

Gifted & Talented

The RFT (request for testing) is live for sign up.
Deadline to sign up is 11/7/14. Don't wait to sign up! It is not first come first served, but since I seem to always be late with newsletters this year, I may not be able to warn you about it next month.

G&T handbooks are here.

I am doing my best to be comprehensive, but you should ALWAYS double check the tour dates and times with the schools, in case there are changes.
Schools and Parent Coordinators: I am happy to list your tours! Please get me the information for the Dec. newsletter.

Inside Schools picks: Not the Usual Suspects

MS 51 in D15 is in the process of changing their admissions threshold:
the total number of points needed in the four core subjects will likely be 12, not 13. A child with all 3's will qualify. So would a child with two 3's, a 2 and a 4. This is just for the initial round of screening. If your child qualifies based on those four subject grades, and you have listed MS 51 #1 or #2 on your application, MS 51 will then request your child's 4th and 5th grade report cards, and that will determine admissions. Still no interviews. As always confirm with your school for the most current information.

Greene Hill School has openings in the 6th grade class for next year. Contact Laurie Baum, Middle School Director for more information at Dates for school tours can be found here.

BUGS (Brooklyn Urban Garden Charter School)
open houses scheduled here. Their applications will be available in early winter and lottery will be in early April.

High School

HS applications will be distributed in mid Oct.
