NYC Public High School: Clear And Simple

How to keep it manageable from start to finish

Please join PSP and Abigail Kahn and Audrey Fleischner of New York City School Help on April 27 at 7:00pm

This webinar is designed to help families understand and navigate the NYC public high school admissions process. New York City offers hundreds of public high school programs, and the process for choosing among them can feel confusing and overwhelming. The DOE provides many helpful guides and publications, but it can still be difficult for families to know where to start, what matters most, and how to approach the search thoughtfully and in an organized way.

In this talk, Abigail and Audrey will clearly and efficiently walk parents through the high school process. Drawing on their experience helping many families navigate the search — as well as their backgrounds as educators — they will focus on what parents actually need to know and when they need to know it.

This talk is designed primarily for general education students. Parents of students with disabilities often find the overview helpful as a starting point, though there may be additional considerations beyond the scope of this presentation.

Abigail and Audrey will:

  • Provide a clear strategy for organizing and managing the high school search

  • Help families understand and interpret the data available about schools

  • Explain what matters most at each stage of the process

  • Share insights from their experience as educators about what different programs actually offer students

  • Offer practical advice, realistic options, and a bit of tough love

  • Briefly discuss how high school choices can shape the college process

While Abigail and Audrey may reference specific schools as examples, they will not review individual programs in detail (there are more than 700 of them!). That level of detail is best addressed in a private consultation.

1/17/24 High School Choice: Loud and Clear

This talk is a clear eyed translation of the DOE's "script". I am a parent and I know how to explain this many layered onion of choices with straight talk and a minimum of crying. Lets face it, this is hard, but I am passionate about empowering you with understanding and resources. This process is not a mystery or all luck. You can manage it with sanity and clarity given a little bit of time. You need to make a balanced list and if you open your mind, you will find more than enough worthy options. This talk is the place to start.
