Alert! Update in Application Process for 3-K Prek and K
/By Dana Szarf
In recent public school admissions cycles, parents were able to view their child’s random number in their MySchools account on the day applications opened. The DOE has now changed this policy.
According to the DOE website parents will only be able to see the random number after the application deadline has passed. Here is the update: “To ensure that only one random number is generated per child, random numbers for 3-K, pre-K, and kindergarten applicants will be visible in MySchools after the application deadline. Remember: families do not need the random number to complete an application and may list as many choices as they like in their preference order.”
We were also able to get a response from the Department of Enrollment that confirms the policy shift: "Random numbers will not be visible at the time of application, as they were in prior years. This adjustment has been implemented to prevent the creation of multiple accounts for the purpose of comparing random numbers. You will be able to see the random number after the application closes."
You can read more about this update on the DOE website: Random Numbers in Admissions
This new policy should not affect how you approach your application. The strategy continues to be:
Rank programs in true preference order
Build a balanced list that includes a mix of in-district programs (including your zoned school), some unzoned programs, and a few out-of-district options
Should the DOE ever change the policy again and random numbers did become visible earlier, the strategy would still remain the same.
While this shift is surprising, it’s not uncommon for the DOE to adjust policies from year to year. With the touring season in full swing, take advantage of the opportunity to visit schools so you can make a true preference list before submitting your application.
